New Romanian Honorary Consulate inaugurated in Germany

The Ambassador of Romania to Germany, Lazar Comanescu, officially inaugurated on 25 November 2011 Romania’s Honorary Consulate at Neustadt an der Weinstraße, which has consular jurisdiction over Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland.

The Honorary Consul is Albrecht Hornbach, president of Hornbach Holding AG (active in Romania, too). He is also president of the Committee on Commerce of the Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Germany and vice-president of the Palatinate Chamber of Commerce.

The inauguration ceremony took place at Neustadt an der Weinstraße, the over 100 guests including members of the Bundestag, MEPs, representatives of the local authorities, the mayor of Neustadt an der Weinstraße, representatives of the business milieu, members of the consular corps and of the Romanian community in the area. Romania’s Consul General in Bonn, Vlad Vasiliu, was there as well.

On the occasion, the Romanian ambassador underscored the fact that the German states of Rhineland-Palatinate, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland, with their strong economy, hold out important prospects in regard to dynamizing the economic exchanges with Romania. He also expressed the belief that the activity of the new honorary consul in that powerfully industrialized German region could only be benefit intensified economic ties with Romania, matching the existing economic potential. Furthermore, the new honorary consul will also play an important role in developing the cultural, academic and scientific relations. “I am sure, Mr. Hornbach, that you will be significantly involved in developing new projects also in the field of academic and scientific contacts, as well as in enhancing the prestige of and knowledge about the Romanian culture in the German society,” said Romania’s Ambassador Lazar Comanescu.

In his turn, the Honorary Consul said he meant to contribute added value to the bilateral relations. He further said he accepted the position because he had known Romania and wanted to help familiarize other people too with the opportunities German investors may find in Romania. Mr. Hornbach also mentioned the generosity, hospitality, friendliness, creativeness and work power of the Romanian people.

Next it was Bundestag member Norbert Schindler’s turn to address the audience and speak of the importance of the new honorary consulate for that region in Germany and for the bilateral relations.

At the end of the ceremony, an exhibition of the Romanian-born sculptress Luana Kroner-Stasek was varnished.

Romania has six honorary consulates in Germany at Stuttgart, Stahnsdorf, Kassel, Hamburg, Leipzig and now Neustadt an der Weinstraße.
