Peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula

Date:
05/27/10

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken note, with great concern, of the conclusions of the investigations into the causes of the sinking of the corvette Cheonan, on 26 March 2010, which killed 46 crew members. The investigations were performed by a specially established commission of the Government of the Republic of Korea, which included the participation of international experts from the United States, United Kingdom, Sweden, Canada and Australia.

Romania appreciates the maturity and prudence demonstrated by the South Korean authorities and reiterates its condolences and compassion conveyed to the Government and families of the deceased.

Romania firmly condemns the attack on the Cheonan, which provoked the escalation of inter-Korean tensions, being a grave threat to security and stability, and joins the efforts of the European partners and North-Atlantic allies destined to ensure peace in the region.
