The Ministry of Foreign Affairs shall organize, on March 20th 2017, on the International Day of La Francophonie, in Bucharest, two public diplomacy events, in cooperation with the Bucharest City Hall and the Ministry of Culture and National Identity. They will provide the occasion to showcase Romania’s francophone initiatives and the contouring of forward directions.
The ceremony inaugurating the bust of Leopold Sedar Senghor, co-founding father of institutional Francophonie, a prestigious cultural and political personality of Senegal, will be held at 11.00 in Piata Francofoniei (La Francophonie Plaza). The urbanistic monument of the La Francophonie Plaza, which is unique in Europe and inaugurated in 2013, shall be thus completed. A delegation headed by the Senegalese Minister of Culture and Communications will participate in the ceremony.
The La Francophonie evening will be organized at the I.L. Caragiale National Theatre, with a program that includes a musical moment performed by Canta - the Romanian Youth Orchestra, and a ceremony of the La Francophonie Awards, from the Group of Francophone Embassies, Delegations and Institutions in Romania (GADIF).
Representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited to Bucharest, officials, representatives of the public administration, of the civil society, involved in francophone projects, political and cultural personalities, journalists, members of university and academic circles and academic with concerns in the sphere of La Francophonie, shall attend the events.
Alongside the festive events organized in Bucharest, the Romanian diplomatic missions will organize, in their countries of residence, a series of cultural and public diplomacy events, dedicated to the Day of La Francophonie (conferences, symposiums, exhibitions, cultural evenings).
As a Member State of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), Romania celebrates, each year on 20th March, the International Day of La Francophonie, alongside other 83 OIF members and observers from five continents.
On 20th March, 1970, the grounds of the institutional La Francophonie were set, by the creation, at Niamey, of the Agency of Cultural and Technical Cooperation (ACCT), subsequently transformed into the International Organisation of La Francophonie.
As a OIF member state, since 1993, on the 20th March each year Romania has been celebrating the International Day of La Francophonie. The event is marked annually, both internally and externally, through Romania's diplomatic missions abroad, through a series of cultural and public diplomacy events, taking place between March-April. The events are aimed at promoting Romania’s image and marking Romania’s francophone identity, as well as the Francophone diversity and values, and target the diplomatic, academic, media, school environments, and the general public, focusing on the young.
Romania has an active cooperation with regional Francophone institutions having their offices in Bucharest - the OIF Regional Office for Central and Eastern Europe (BRECO) and the Regional Office for Central and Eastern Europe of the University Agency of la Francophonie (BECO-UAF), as well as the embassies of OIF member or observer states, accredited in Bucharest, convened within the Group of Francophone Embassies, Delegations and Institutions in Romania - GADIF.
