Minister Teodor Melescanu at the joint press conference for the launch of the Bulgarian EU Council Presidency: "Maintaining and strengthening European unity is a fundamental common goal in the current European context"

On 15 January 2018, Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Melescanu participated in the launching conference of the Bulgarian EU Council Presidency, organized in Bucharest by the Embassy of the Republic of Bulgaria in Romania, in cooperation with the European Commission Representation in Romania.

The event was attended by E.S. Todor Churov, Ambassador of the Republic of Bulgaria to Romania, Angela Cristea, Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Romania, members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Bucharest and representatives of the media.

"Romania and Bulgaria enjoy very good bilateral relations and share similar views regarding the regional, European and international agenda. Our countries are close partners within the EU, allies of trust in NATO and are credible voters in their joint efforts to support the consolidation of the European Union," the foreign affairs minister said, welcoming the goals presented by the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council.

The Romanian official stressed that Bulgaria and Romania will exercise in successive Trios their first mandate as the Presidency of the EU Council and will work together to ensure continuity between them and coherence in advancing common European priorities. He stressed that the national training process for assuming the presidency of the EU Council by our country in the first semester of 2019 is in full progress.

Minister Teodor Melescanu pointed out that in the current European context the maintenance and consolidation of European unity is a fundamental common objective (reflected also by the motto of the Bulgarian Presidency: United we stand strong.) He expressed Romania's support for the consolidation of European project on the basis of concrete, coherent, unitary and inclusive approaches that respond to the expectations of European citizens.

"We particularly appreciate the attention given by the Bulgarian Presidency to the active dialogue with European citizens, as well as the concern to meet their needs for increasing security, employment, sustainable growth and ensuring a stronger presence of the EU on the world stage", added the head of Romanian diplomacy.

He also mentioned that negotiations on the next Multiannual Financial Framework will offer Bulgaria and Romania the opportunity to contribute to reaching a consensus on budgetary instruments that support European political priorities in the coming years. He also reminded that Romania shares the vision of the Bulgarian Presidency on the need to reinforce the EU's fundamental and traditional policies that play a key role in maintaining economic and social cohesion: cohesion policy and the common agricultural policy.

Minister Teodor Melescanu expressed the appreciation and full support of the Bulgarian Presidency regarding the prioritization of the European perspective and the connectivity of the Western Balkans. "We have the opportunity to advance the enlargement process together. This is also an important objective for us, a future priority of the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council in 2019. We will continue to work together to achieve this strategic goal." He also reminded that Romania supports the objective of continue to develop our relations with our Eastern Partnership partners. The Eastern Partnership Summit, held in Brussels in November 2017, has delivered an important EU political message in this regard and has set a concrete working agenda - "20 outcomes for 2020" – which must be actively implemented.

Speaking about a safe and stable Europe, the Romanian dignitary stressed the importance of enhancing the security of EU citizens, strengthening border controls and managing migration more effectively. He reiterated Romania's support for strengthening the EU's role in the field of security and defence and for the global implementation of the EU Global Strategy.

Minister Teodor Melescanu also highlighted objectives of common interest, the need to promote the visibility and importance of the European Strategy for the Danube Region, as well as increased European support for the Black Sea region and regional cooperation efforts. "It's a unique opportunity. We will work together to better present and promote these dossiers as priorities at European level," he said at the end of his speech.
