With regard to the information presented in the media according to which Romania would not be ready to take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and the Finnish Government would have expressed its willingness to provide support, including by advancing Finland's mandate to the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, starting from 1 January 2019, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs makes the following statements:

As the Romanian Government has repeatedly reiterated, Romania is ready to take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, on 1 January 2019, and the preparations take place in accordance with the agreed schedule.

We also draw the attention to the fact that the Finnish Government appreciates that Romania's preparations for taking over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union are on schedule, and the dialogue within the TRIO format, confirms, once again, Romania's ability to successfully exercise this mandate.

Following the clarifications provided by the Romanian Embassy in Helsinki, the main Finnish newspaper, published an update of the information related to the statements of the Finnish officials that includes the position of the Romanian Executive clarifying that Romania is not in the impossibility to exercise its EU Council Presidency mandate and will not seek assistance from the Finnish Government in this regard.

We reiterate that the proper exercise of the mandate for the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union is a joint exercise, which must be based on a political consensus among all the state institutions and on an open and honest dialogue that will allow Romania to successfully fulfil this responsibility.

This mandate is an opportunity for Romania to confirm its commitment to the European Union and to the promotion of its values and to strengthen and articulate the role of Romania among the Member States.

Last but not least, we stress the importance of handling with responsibility information that is not founded on  concrete endeavours  and which may affect the image of Romania, its credibility and its status at European level.
