Minister Delegate for European Affairs George Ciamba meets with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet

Press release

Today, February 28, 2019, the minister delegate for European affairs, George Ciamba, had a bilateral meeting with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, on the margins of the high-level session of the Human Rights Council of Geneva.

Minister Delegate George Ciamba assured the High Commissioner for Human Rights of his availability to support the synergy between the work of the UN High Commissioner and of the EU Special Representative for Human Rights.

The Romanian minister highlighted Romania’s strong commitment, in its capacity as Council Presidency, to promoting the respect for human rights and to fighting hate speech, antisemitism, racism and intolerance.

The Romanian official pointed out that the Romanian Presidency is making important steps in countering disinformation, a phenomenon which could affect European democracies, as it leads to hate speech propagation and to dividing societies for the purpose of attaining reprobate goals. In their exchange, George Ciamba recalled the progress made towards the actual implementation of the Action Plan against Disinformation that the EU adopted at the end of last year. The plan consists of four pillars and 10 actions, thus ensuring an integrated response.

Minister George Ciamba assured Michelle Bachelet that the Romanian Presidency placed special emphasis on countering antisemitism and stressed out that recent surveys showed that antisemitism was growing in Europe, which is something that should leave no one indifferent.

On their meeting in Geneva, George Ciamba invited the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to participate in the Gender Equality Conference, an event organised under the aegis of the Romanian prime minister, to be held in Bucharest at the end of May.
