Participation of Secretary of State for European Affairs Melania-Gabriela Ciot in the conference “A Europe of Shared Values and Civil Society”

Today, May 7, Secretary of State for European Affairs Melania-Gabriela Ciot participated in the conference “A Europe of Shared Values and Civil Society”, organised by the Diversity Europe Group of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC).

In her speech, the secretary of state thanked the EESC for the interest granted to the Work Programme of the Romanian Presidency of the Council of the European Union and for the openness in formulating opinions on important themes in this programme.

She also emphasised the high importance of “renewing the commitment to a Europe based on shared European values and fundamental freedoms” and of “encouraging citizens’ involvement in debates regarding the European future”.

In the context of the talks on the future of Europe, the secretary of state for European affairs mentioned the determination of the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council to achieve concrete results, as well as Romania’s belief that unity and cohesion are necessary at this time of changes for the European Union.

In this respect, the secretary of state reminded that the Sibiu Summit of 9 May is an important opportunity to send out a strong message for strengthening the European project.

At the same time, she pointed out that action taken needs to help reduce the economic and social inequalities between member states and help overcome current and future challenges.

At the end of her speech, the secretary of state briefly outlined the most significant results of the work carried out during the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council and wished the participants success in the debates scheduled during the day.
