Welcoming by the Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Teodor Meleșcanu, of the Minister-in-office for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Albania, Gent Cakaj

The Romanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Teodor Meleșcanu, had a meeting today with the Minister-in-office for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Albania, Gent Cakaj, during his visit to Romania, today, on June 10th, 2019.

Minister Teodor Meleșcanu reiterated Romania's support for the European path of the Republic of Albania, including in the context of the special attention given to the Western Balkans region by the Romanian Presidency of the EU Council. The Romanian official conveyed congratulations to the Albanian counterpart for his country's progress and for obtaining the recommendation to open the accession negotiations in the European Commission's Report published on May 29th, 2019, a recommendation that Romania firmly supports.

Minister Teodor Meleșcanu encouraged the Albanian authorities to continue the reform process, stressed the importance of resuming the internal political dialogue and reiterated Romania's full readiness to provide technical assistance to Tirana in the process of the EU accession.

During the meeting, the two officials welcomed the dynamics of the bilateral relations both at the political and sectoral level and reviewed the positive developments of the economic cooperation. Opportunities for strengthening cooperation in defence, education and culture were also discussed, and the need to update the bilateral legal framework was reminded.

The two officials highlighted that bilateral economic relations are steadily rising, although they are still far from the existing potential, and additional measures to boost trade and economic, technical and scientific cooperation have been agreed upon.

The two officials welcomed the 9th session of the Intergovernmental Joint Committee Romania-Albania on technical, scientific and economic cooperation together with a bilateral business forum in November 2018 in Tirana and discussed the organization of its 10th session at the end of 2019 in Bucharest.

The two officials welcomed good cooperation within NATO, the OSCE and other international or regional organizations.
