Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu welcomes the US Agreed Ambassador to Bucharest, Adrian Zuckerman, Who Is Presenting the Copy of His Credentials

Minister of foreign affairs Bogdan Aurescu received the US agreed ambassador to Bucharest, Adrian Zuckerman, for presenting the copy of his credentials, on December 14, 2019.

Minister Bogdan Aurescu sent warm greetings to the ambassador of the United States on his return to Romania, expressing the satisfaction of the Romanian side for continuously maintaining American diplomatic representation at an ambassador level in Bucharest. He also wished the new ambassador great success in fulfilling his mandate and assured him of all the support of the MFA and its staff to this end.

Bogdan Aurescu evoked the solidity of the bilateral Strategic Partnership, in full development and deepening, especially after the very substantial and successful meeting in August between President Klaus Iohannis and President Donald Trump. On the occasion of the high-level meeting, the areas of the Strategic Partnership, of common priority interest, were expanded. Minister Bogdan Aurescu showed that a continuous follow-up process is needed – a process which will allow the full implementation of the strategic decisions, including in the field of energy security and 5G.

Minister Bogdan Aurescu and the US ambassador have reviewed the priorities of the bilateral relationship, in preparation for next year’s political-diplomatic dialogue, as 2020 marks 140 years of diplomatic relations. In this context, Minister Bogdan Aurescu recalled the issues addressed in the very good and recent discussion with the US Secretary of State.

At the same time, minister Bogdan Aurescu expressed the belief that, through the active involvement of the two parties, a new session of the Strategic Dialogue between Romania and the US could be organized in the near future, pointing to the interest of the Romanian side to deepen the cooperation and coordination in all the thematic aspects managed by the bilateral working groups within it.

There was also an exchange of views on the regional security context, minister Bogdan Aurescu emphasizing that Romania is a trusted ally of the USA, particularly involved and pro-active in the Black Sea region and emphasized the need to increase the American military presence in Romania.

Minister Bogdan Aurescu recalled an objective of great importance for Romanian citizens – accessing the Waiver Visa Program.

At the same time, he mentioned that the Romanian society is one of the most pro-transatlantic and pro-American in Europe, and that our country is constantly working, within the EU and NATO, to strengthen the transatlantic connection.

Ambassador Adrian Zuckerman expressed his firm commitment to contributing to the strong development of the Strategic Partnership, underlining the appreciation that Romania enjoys on behalf of President Donald Trump and the entire US Administration, and adding that "Romania cannot have a better friend than the USA”.

At the same time, the American diplomat noted the remarkable transformation of Romania over the past 30 years, since the 1989 Revolution, and underlined that it has become one of the strongest allies of the USA, a member of NATO and the EU, with a robust democracy, respecting the principles of the rule of law and market economy.
