Minister Teodor Baconschi at Conference on “Crossborder Security from the Angle of Romania’s Accession to the Schengen Area”

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Teodor Baconschi, participated on 13 January 2011, in a Conference on “Crossborder Security from the Angle of Romania’s Accession to the Schengen Area”, organized by the Agora University of Oradea. The opening of the conference was attended by Senate vice-president Petru Filip, Bihor County Prefect Gavrila Ghilea, the rector of the Agora University, Prof. Misu-Jan Manolescu, the head of the Bihor County Border Police Inspectorate, Nicolaie Iancu, members of the academia.

In his address, the Foreign Minister stated that Romania’s stand on the Schengen issue was “a position of national dignity, which proceeds from the principle of equality of the member states.” In this respect, Minister Baconschi said Romania had to overcome the mentality of a candidate state.

Referring to the Mechanism for Cooperation and verification, the head of the Romanian diplomacy said it was “useful in the field it was created for, but it only applies to Justice.”

Teodor Baconschi expressed his hope that the political forces involved would cease the polemics and admit the need for consensus on this issue of national interest.
