Minister Teodor Baconschi at signing of Agreement on Romania’s Accession to European Space Agency Convention

Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodor Baconschi will participate, on 20 January 2011, in the signing of the Agreement on Romania’s Accession to the Convention of the European Space Agency (ESA). The ceremony, to be held at the MFA headquarters, will be attended by many governmental representatives, parliamentarians and members of the Romanian scientific and academic community.

The agreement is to be signed by Jean-Jacques Dordain, ESA Director General and Marius-Ioan Piso, Director General and Chairman of the Romanian Space Agency.

In keeping with the ESA Council decision of 16 December 2010, Romania has been unanimously accepted as a full member of the European Space Agency.

Romania’s membership of ESA offers major opportunities and guarantees, in point of both R&D level and the national high-tech industry, which can thus develop steadily, the related jobs being guaranteed on the long term. Direct access to ESA space systems will enable Romania to develop space applications for agriculture, environment, transports, natural disaster measurement and telemedicine.
