Visit of the Secretary of State for Global Bilateral Affairs, Monica Gheorghiţă, to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam

Secretary of State for Global Bilateral Affairs, Monica Gheorghită, is taking a working visit to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam between 13th and 17th of May 2019. On this occasion, a round of political and diplomatic consultations took place in Hanoi on 14th of May 2019 with Deputy Minister for Europe of the Vietnamese Foreign Ministry, To Anh Dung.

The discussions focused on the main issues on the bilateral agenda, with an emphasis on the economic component and sectoral cooperation.

The Romanian official evoked the economic engagements assumed by the two sides during the visit of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc to Bucharest in April 2019, as the organisation of this year's next session of the Intergovernmental Joint Commission. She also highlighted the conditions for implementing cooperation agreements signed between Romanian and Vietnamese companies on the occasion of the economic forum, held in the context of the recent official visit by the Vietnamese Prime Minister.

Co-operation in the field of labour and social justice has been an important element of the agenda. In this context, the Romanian side referred to the importance of capitalizing  the existing legislative framework for the efficient management of labour migration between the two states.

Also, the Secretary of State Monica Gheorghită underlined Romania's interest in certifying Romanian exports of animal products on the Vietnamese market as soon as possible, encouraging the use of the cooperation format established by the Memorandum of Understanding on Agriculture, animal health and food safety, signed in April 2019.

At the same time, the two officials addressed topical issues related to EU-Vietnam cooperation, with emphasis on the timetable for the signing of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement and the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement, the ASEM dialogue and mutual support for the two countries' to various UN bodies.

The visit program also included a meeting with Tran Thanh Nam, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, to exchange views on how to intensify bilateral co-operation in the field, on governmental lines, as well as on business environments specialized in the two states.

State Secretary Monica Gheorghită had a separate meeting with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, following the visit of the high-ranking official to Bucharest. The issues of bilateral sectoral cooperation have been reviewed in the preparation of the high-level visits to the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states on 3rd of  February 1950. The head of the Vietnamese Executive thanked the Romanian side for its support, as Vietnam's traditional partner and as the country holding the Presidency of the EU Council, with a view to signing the Free Trade Agreement and the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement as soon as possible. The parties highlighted the two governments' commitment to developing the multi-sectoral cooperation and to materializing the results of the visit to Bucharest of Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.
