Press release

The minister of Foreign Affairs, Teodor Melescanu, had a telephone conversation today, November 15th, 2018, with the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chrystia Freeland. Aspects of the bilateral relation have been reviewed, with a focus on consistent co-operation within NATO, with the prospect of celebrating, in 2019, the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Romanian-Canadian diplomatic relations.

Also, the possibilities for strengthening the cooperation between Romania and Canada in a multilateral framework were discussed, in support of the UN peace and security promotion process, including the potential of Romania's involvement in the Integrated Multidimensional Stabilization Mission of Mali (MINUSMA).

The Romanian minister thanked Canada for its contribution to the enhanced airspace operations in Romania's airspace, with Canadian forces continuing to contribute by rotation to the air traffic operation in Romania over the next four years, according to the commitment made at the NATO Summit in Brussels in July 2018.

The Romanian minister of Foreign Affairs stressed the positive impulse for the bilateral visa-elimination for Romanian citizens visiting Canada for tourism purposes, expressing satisfaction with the reduction in asylum claims registered in recent months, and reiterating the willingness of the Romanian authorities to continue their cooperation with the Canadian ones on this segment.
