Foreign minister Teodor Melescanu’s meeting with Dunja Mijatović, Human Rights Commissioner of the Council of Europe

The Romanian minister of Foreign Affairs, Teodor Melescanu, had a meeting on November 15th, 2018 with the new Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe, Dunja Mijatović, during the visit of the CoE official to Romania on November 12th-16th, 2018.

The two officials exchanged views on the role and the importance of the work of the Council of Europe's Commissioner for Human Rights in the context of developments in international relations and the challenges that the Strasbourg Organization is facing.

The Romanian official reiterated Romania's attachment to respecting the values of the CoE and, above all, human rights and fundamental freedoms. In this context, he reminded of the progress achieved by our country in recent years, both in terms of adopting legal regulations in this field and of their implementation.

During the talks, the Council of Europe official presented the main directions of his mandate and stressed the need to strengthen the rights of people with disabilities, such as combating domestic violence.

The Romanian minister of Foreign Affairs mentioned in the context, that the promotion of gender equality as well as the fight against domestic violence will be among the priorities of the Romanian Government on the occasion of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2019.

The discussions highlighted the added value that the Council of Europe, through the programs it applies, can have on improving the respect for human rights in the member states of the Council of Europe.

Background information:

The main elements of the CHR mandate, a function created in 1999, are: strengthening respect for human rights; assisting Member States to meet CoE standards in the field; identifying gaps in state laws and practices and proposing remedies for these deficiencies; facilitating the work of the Ombudsman of the people in the Member States. The CHR mandate is six years and can not be renewed.

From April 1, 2018, the CHR function is accomplished by Dunja Mijatović (Bosnia and Herzegovina) elected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe at the January 2018 session.
