Press release

Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu received the U.S. Ambassador to Bucharest, Hans Klemm, on a farewell visit  at the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on November 29, 2019.

Minister Bogdan Aurescu expressed the special appreciation of Romania, as well as his personal appreciation, for Hans Klemm’s activity throughout his mandate in Bucharest and for his personal, substantial and utterly efficient involvement in the development and enhancement of the bilateral Strategic Partnership.

On this occasion, he evoked the excellent nature of the high-level political interaction, unprecedented in terms of pace and substance in the history of bilateral relationship, that has been reached following the meetings of the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis with his American counterpart, President Donald Trump, in June 2017 and in August 2019. These meetings had a decisive contribution to the Strategic Partnership extension and consolidation. In turn, Ambassador Klemm thanked Minister Aurescu for the excellent cooperation and personal contribution to the Strategic Partnership consolidation, evoking important moments and achievements of his mandate to which the two officials both worked and contributed.

Recalling the recent meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in the margins of the NATO ministers meeting in Brussels, Minister Bogdan Aurescu pointed out the importance of extending the American military presence in Romania and strengthening NATO's defence and deterrence posture on the Eastern flank, including in the Black Sea. The Romanian official recalled the most important aspects of NATO ministers meeting in Brussels, having in view the preparation of NATO Heads of State and Government meeting in London that will take place on December 3-4, 2019.

Minister Bogdan Aurescu and Ambassador Hans Klemm briefly evoked the recent developments in the significant bilateral dialogue dynamics, including the consolidation of the cooperation in the nuclear civil field and the assurance of 5G network security – aspects of strategic importance for the common prosperity and security of the two partners. At the same time, Minister Bogdan Aurescu reiterated and asserted the legitimate interest of Romania, one of the most solid and engaged partners of the U.S., to adhere to the Visa Waiver Program. He also expressed his confidence that the positive trend, steady decrease of the visa refusal rates over Ambassador Klemm’s mandate, will continue as well during the mandate of his successor.
