Press release

Minister of foreign affairs Bogdan Aurescu met with a delegation led by Cherrie Daniels, Special Envoy of the US State Department for Holocaust Issues, in the margins of the ministerial meeting of the International Holocaust Memory Alliance (IHRA), which took place in Brussels on January 19, 2020.

The meeting was also attended by Gideon Taylor, chair of operations of the World Jewish Restitution Organization (WJRO) and Wesley Fisher, director of research of the WJRO.

The discussion led to an exchange of views on the priorities of IHRA and on the related topical issues on the international agenda. In this context, minister Bogdan Aurescu highlighted Romania's continued commitment to the fight against anti-Semitism, xenophobia and intolerance, with our country sharing these fundamental priorities with both the US and Israel.

Minister Bogdan Aurescu presented the recent legislative measures taken by Romania and aimed at speeding up the process of restoring Jewish properties that were abusively confiscated by the communist regime and, respectively, increasing the amount of allowances granted to Holocaust survivors. He reconfirmed the commitment of the Romanian Government for these issues. The representative of the State Department welcomed the recent entry into force of the law on the establishment of the National Museum of Jewish History and the Holocaust in Romania.
